Commissioner Ray Kelly |

| This morning in NY Harbor Police Commissioner Kelly presented a Proclamation from Mayor Bloomberg to Commodore Ackerman proclaiming June 27, 2009 Coast Guard Auxiliary Day. For over 70 years Coast Guard Auxiliarists have volunteered their time, their vessels and their aircraft protecting America’s waterways. During World War II over 50,000 Auxiliarists served the Coast Guard, providing coastal surveillance, defense and rescue of the victims of German U-boat attacks.

| In 2008 the Coast Guard Auxiliary saved 267 lives and over $52 Million Dollars in property. The Auxiliary conducted over 113,000 courtesy Vessel Safety Checks, and nearly 3,000 public education courses, ensuring the safety of millions of recreational boaters.
Quoted from Mayor Bloomnberg’s Proclamation: “New Yorkers will never forget the heroic deeds the Coast Guard Auxiliary performed for our city in response to the attacks of 9/11, providing security, emergency medical assistance, and technical support. It’s members displayed the same heroism and dedication to our country in assisting those affected by Hurricane Katrina. In both instances, they continued a proud tradition of service that lasted 70 years and will continue into the future. For all the Coast Guard Auxiliary has done for our city, it is more deserving of our thanks and praise. On behalf of all New Yorkers, I’m proud to join in commemorating this milestone anniversary.”
